The HPCI (High Performance Computing Interface) module provides an abstract interface for accessing a collection of computing resources. If you write a program using this interface, you need only specify one parameter to indicate the type of collection that you wish to use and the appropriate driver module (HPCD::*) is used to translate from the abstract interface to the actual interface for the collection being used. As long as the code uses only the generic mechanisms, this means that the same program can be run on a different type of collection simply by changing that one parameter. At present, there are drivers provided for SGE (Sun Grid Engine) and uni (uniprocessor - for development and testing purposes); as additional drivers become available, the full potential for portable cluster/cloud programming will become more useful.
